Can personal websites replace "social media"?

June 8th, 2026

By social media, I really mean platforms that are owned and controlled by the big tech companies. I don't even know if you can call Instagram social media anymore if most people are using it to watch short form content. LinkedIn feels like social media except you have to be on your best behavior. TikTok is just an engagement bait factory. "Performative" people and people trying to prove they are not performative are jumbled together everywhere. It's kind of a stressful mess.

I think there's some pros to a personal website. I don't have to spread out my work and hobbies across multiple platforms. Anyone can see what I'm up to by going to my website. I don't have to follow a specific format dictated by tech company. Rage bait content will never reach this website. There are no ads.

There are some downsides I think. I won't have my posts randomly pop up on people's feeds. I won't be TikTok famous. I probably won't find a job from this. I will receive less attention. I guess the question is if that is a bad thing or not.
